When you look at the repellent section of almost any section of a hardware store or garden center, you will find that there are plenty of options, and one type that is marketed as being effective against almost all animals are the audio deterrents. These devices can work in a variety of different ways, but the key factor is that the high pitched noise is said to drive pigeons away, as they will find it unbearable to be near the source of the sound. This sound is actually outside the range of human hearing, so for most people they will find it difficult to confirm if the device is even working, let alone being able to confirm if it is effective.

Different Types Of Audio Deterrents

The two main versions of these devices will either be battery or mains operated, and the battery operated versions will usually have a motion sensor, meaning that they produce a quick burst of noise to drive the animals away. The other type of device is one that will need to be plugged into a mains socket, as it will produce a permanent high pitched tone to try and keep the animals away.

How The Devices Claim To Work

The theory behind these devices is that animals have a different range of hearing to people, and there are certain areas that can be heard by animals that is out of the range of human hearing. The human ear finds high pitched noises within the hearing range to be quite unpleasant, so the idea behind these devices is that sounds at the top end of the animal hearing range will be unpleasant to them.

Reasons High Pitch Sound Deterrent Machines Are Ineffective

The main issue with these type of devices is that how unpleasant these noises really are to pigeons has never been proved, and they tend to have a very low success rate at driving pigeons away. Even if the animals do find the devices unpleasant, the attractions of the locations will often override how uncomfortable the noise is.

Resolving A Pigeon Infestation

The approach that you can take to get rid of pigeons will vary depending on the type of infestation that you have. Pigeons roosting on a roof can be dealt with using pigeon netting or spikes on the problem area, while those who have an infestation within a confined space such as an attic may want to look at exclusion or trapping to try and get rid of the pigeons properly.
