Pest animals such as pigeons can cause a range of different problems, so there are a range of methods that you can use to deal with the problem, and one of these is to trap the animal in the cage and then to relocate it a distance away from your home or the area where the bird is causing an issue. This is a method that is used successfully with a range of different pest animals, and is often used because people are naturally humane and want to treat the animal with respect. However, pigeons are a different type of pest animal to the majority of other species that cause problems, and this means they do need to be dealt with differently.

Problems With Transporting Pigeons

One of the first reasons that you should reconsider your approach if you are planning to trap and relocate pigeons is the distance that you will have to cover. Pigeons can easily cover several hundred miles, so in order to get the bird as far away as possible, you will often need to drive the bird over a long distance for this to be effective. The other issue with transporting the birds is that you will need to provide food and water for the birds over such a long distance, and this can lead to droppings that will leave an odor in the vehicle, unless you have a truck where the pigeons can safely be placed in the rear.

The Pigeon's Homing Instinct

Another reason why relocation doesn't usually work effectively when you have a pigeon problem is that pigeons can cover long distance in a relatively short time. They also have a superb homing instinct, which is why so many of their ancestors would have been used for carrying messages, and this is why relocation is only a temporary solution, as the birds will be back in the area within a few days of being relocated.

Alternative Methods Of Dealing With A Pigeon Problem

If the pigeon problem that you are experiencing is one where the pigeons are roosting on the roof or are landing on window ledges, then solutions such as anti pigeon netting on the roof, or pigeon spikes on the window sills can help to deter these pest animals. A more serious problem is when the pigeons have found their way in to a cavity or attic to nest, and using exclusion funnels in these spaces is another effective method of dealing with a pigeon infestation.
