Foxes live in urban areas these days, although that hasn’t always been the case. They’re incredibly smart, cunning, clever, and adaptable creatures, and this has led them to follow us. They know that we mean food, whether we give it to them or not. Many people feed foxes, and those that aren’t doing it on purpose are leaving their garbage bags unattended and ready to be ripped open, which is essentially the same thing.
Homeowners don’t really worry about animal-proofing their homes until it is too late and the animal has already moved in, so foxes have free reign. They know this because they’ve been living that way for some time. They’ve had no choice as their regular habitats have been almost entirely taken away by human activity.
Forest and wooded areas are cut down because we need the trees and we need the space. Foxes would have made the perfect home for a fox once upon a time, with plenty around to help them hide from predators, as well as plenty of prey to feast on. These areas are harder to find now though, and that’s because of us. We're cutting them down. Houses. Shopping malls. Industrial centers. Wildlife is paying the price, but we’ve known that for years.
The more that we cut down the natural habitats of these animals, the more they are forced to move in closer to us. That’s why it is more common to find foxes in urban environments, rather than wild ones.
