Many of Nevada's wild animals have learned to adapt and even thrive in our homes. For example some wildlife have found that attics make great places to live. Other animals find refuge under homes or porches. Invariably, these animals cause damage. Rodents, like squirrels and rats, love to chew on electrical wires once in an attic, and this causes a serious fire hazard. Raccoons can cause serious contamination in an attic with their droppings and parasites. Same goes for bat or bird colonies. We specialize in solving Nevada's wildlife problems, from snake removal to large jobs like commercial bat control, we do it all.

We handle every aspect of wildlife control. We are fully equipped to work on any project, large or small. Some of our services include:

  • Humane wildlife trapping and relocaton services
  • Removal of raccoons or squirrels from the attic
  • Building repairs and prevention work to keep animals out
  • 100% permanent elimination of rats, mice, or even bats
  • Cleanup of animal waste and odor control services
  • Emergency animal issues, and dead animal removal

We do not handle dog or cat problems. If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Clark county animal services for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, spay & neuter programs, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, bite reports, deceased pets, lost pets, local animal complaints and to report neglected or abused animals. There is no free Enterprise animal control for wildlife issues.

Enterprise Wildlife Removal Tip:

Discovering a raccoon has made its way into your chimney can be a frustrating and potentially hazardous situation. Raccoons can get stuck, create nests that block airflow, and their droppings can pose health risks. Removing them requires a careful and humane approach. Here's a guide on how to safely encourage raccoons to leave your chimney.

Confirming Their Presence

Listen for telltale sounds such as scratching, thumping, or chattering coming from the chimney. You might also hear high-pitched squeals if it's a mother with her young. Look for signs like debris falling into the fireplace or dark stains and odors emanating from the chimney.

Prioritize Humane Eviction

The goal is to encourage the raccoon to leave voluntarily. Avoid trying to smoke them out or using harmful chemicals. Trapping inside the chimney can be difficult and dangerous for both you and the animal.

Making the Chimney Unappealing

Raccoons seek dark, quiet, and sheltered spaces. Disrupting these conditions can encourage them to move on.

  • Bright Light: Shine a bright work light down the chimney flue from the top or, if safe to do so, place one near the fireplace opening (ensure the fireplace is closed off to prevent the raccoon from entering the house). Raccoons prefer darkness.
  • Loud Noise: Place a portable radio near the fireplace opening (again, ensuring the fireplace is closed) and play it loudly, particularly talk radio. The human voices and constant noise can be disturbing to the raccoon.
  • Strong Scents: Hang rags soaked in ammonia (in a secure container that won't fall down the flue) near the top of the chimney or the fireplace opening. The strong smell can be irritating to raccoons. Be cautious when using ammonia and ensure proper ventilation.

Timing is Critical: Beware of Kits

Spring and early summer are birthing seasons for raccoons. If you suspect a mother has young (kits) in the chimney, avoid aggressive eviction tactics. The kits are dependent on their mother for survival. If you hear high-pitched squealing, it's highly likely kits are present. In this situation, the best approach is often to wait until the young are old enough to follow their mother out (typically around 8-12 weeks). Patience is key, or you may need to contact a wildlife professional for guidance.

Creating an Escape Route

Ensure the raccoon has a clear and safe way to exit the chimney.

  • Open the Damper: If your fireplace has a damper, ensure it is fully open.
  • Rough Rope or Branch: If possible and safe, you can try lowering a thick rope or a sturdy, rough branch down the chimney flue. This can provide the raccoon with something to climb out on. Secure the top end of the rope or branch firmly.

Monitoring and Patience

It may take some time for the raccoon to feel secure enough to leave. Continue the deterrent methods for a few days and monitor for any signs of departure. Look for tracks leading away from the chimney or the absence of noises from within.

Preventing Future Problems

Once you are certain the raccoon has left, the most crucial step is to prevent future occurrences.

  • Install a Chimney Cap: The most effective way to prevent raccoons (and other animals) from entering your chimney is to install a sturdy chimney cap made of metal mesh. Ensure it is properly sized and installed.
  • Trim Overhanging Branches: Cut back any tree branches that might allow raccoons easy access to your roof and chimney.

When to Call a Professional

If you are uncomfortable attempting these methods, suspect the raccoon is trapped or injured, or if you believe there are young kits present, it's best to contact a professional wildlife removal service. They have the expertise and equipment to safely and humanely address the situation.

Getting a raccoon out of your chimney requires patience and a focus on humane eviction techniques. By making the environment undesirable and providing a means of escape, you can encourage the animal to leave on its own and prevent future intrusions by securing your chimney with a cap.
