Exploring the efficacy of repellents against squirrels

When you are trying to emulate Wile E. Coyote and crafting an intricate plan to eliminate those pesky squirrels from your property, it is important to remove any repellents from your mind. Why I hear you ask. Well, these repellents are simply ineffective against the rodents, and it will be an inevitable waste of time and money that could have been spent on smarter solutions.

Mothball myths

One of the most common repellents for squirrels, mothballs are composed of a chemical compound called naphthalene, which has a characteristically pungent odor. It seems that the common belief is that this horrendous smell will repel squirrels, but this isn't true, and there are two main reasons for this.

Firstly, the amount of naphthalene contained within a single mothball is way too small to affect the squirrel. It might work against insects, but it does not have a prayer against anything larger. Secondly, squirrels are highly territorial creatures who strive to maintain control of an area they have just inhabited. Bad smells will certainly not convince them to leave.

Ammonia

Once again, this is used as a repellent because it gives off a bad smell. The mothball discussion applies here too, with the added issue of having to apply ammonia repeatedly because its vapors get used up quickly.

Strobing lights

Squirrels are not nocturnal, so why anyone would consider bright lights as effective repellents against them, I do not know. It is an absurd notion, to say the least, as these rodents don't seem to fear strong lights at all.

In any case, they will simply avoid the illuminated area and move on to a darker and cozier part of your house if the light inexplicably disturbs them.

Ultrasonic machines

Another contender for the worst ideas about squirrel removal, an ultrasonic machine is essentially a device that emits sounds in the ultrasonic frequency. Yes, we can't hear any of it, but we are still prepared to trust that it will work.

Now, not only is this device very expensive and inaccessible, there is no scientific proof that ultrasonic sounds bother squirrels at all. This is another example of how going with the tide of popular opinion can work out so horribly for us.

Eviction fluids

These are essentially fluids composed of predator urine and other secretions, and they have been shown to be effective in some cases. Sensing that predators must be nearby, the rodents are compelled to move along or go somewhere else thereby leaving you in peace.

This works by inducing genuine fear in the hearts of the little guys, and that is sufficient to convince them that this place is not for them.
