Once they leave, they cannot go back in because of the design of the trap. Unless they have unlimited food supply up there, this is bound to work.

The other type of trap is a live trap. Live traps use bait to lure the opossum inside, closing once they trigger the switch. The opossum can no longer leave the trap, allowing you to pick it up and release it somewhere else.

Whatever type of trap you use, do check the attic for babies and anything else afterwards. Make sure that the opossum has no reason to return to your property.
